Hi. I’m Sean and I’m a comedian living in Townsville in tropical North Queensland, Australia.
I’m in my early fifties and I’ve been doing comedy for nearly two years. That’s right… I started very late.
Like pretty much all comics, I started doing Open Mics and they’re still 90% of what I do. In the short time I’ve been doing this I’ve also played some bigger rooms, done a Showcase set I’m proud of, and I’ve been fortunate enough to support amazing comedians I enjoy and admire like Jacques Barrett, Al Del Bene, Evan Hocking and Luke Heggie. I’m pretty happy with the trajectory of my comedy “career” (calling it that is hilarious to me).
If you asked me to sum up my comic ‘persona’ in three words, you’d be in good company. It’s amazing how many people ask for that. What I’d tell you is “sardonic street philosopher,” but I doubt I fit any more neatly in that reductive pigeonhole than you would in a three-word cage of your own design.
It’ll do, though. It probably tells you where I’m coming from. Very early in my “career” (still funny, IMHO), someone described me as a “storyteller” and that’s not the whole truth either, but I’m take it – mostly because I’m more likely to present long-form material than one-liners.
I’m also a bit of a comedy geek. It’s not my only passion; Breaks music, Dystopian Science Fiction movies from the 1970’s, Existentialist Philosophy, Superheroes, Cats, Dogs, Social Justice, Fried Rice and Porn are all relevant to my interests. But I am very interested in the art and craft of stand-up, and the philosophical dimensions of what we do.
That’s where this site comes in… I know I’m probably supposed to use it as a promotional tool, and I’ll probably put some gig updates here, but I’m much more interested in reflecting on the theories, contradictions and experiences of the whole comedy thing. Yeah – I’m not very pragmatic, am I?
Anyway; if you want to drop me a line, ask me a question or make me an offer I can’t refuse you’re very welcome to contact me at sean@seancoopercomedy.com
The 76-word Bio:
Sean Cooper entered comedy late in life when his voracious need for approval from strangers finally became impossible to manage.
A self-confessed misanthrope and comedy geek, Sean’s hobbies include unsubscribing from email lists, eating his feelings, and mixing fancy cocktails to make his alcohol dependence look sophisticated and fun.
Sean insists it’s not all about the big money and glamour though; he uses comedy as a lens to make sense of an absurd and dysfunctional world.
