Many of my discussions with fellow comics are, like the bulk of the email I get through this site, around the actual practice of writing jokes and generating material. It seems to be the trickiest part of what we do. I rarely struggle with it but when writer’s block does hit, it hits hard.
I’m sharing a video that guarantees to help you with this, a YouTube video from a Channel I follow called Let’s Talk Comedy. Described as a “a tutorial channel for people passionate about learning stand up comedy,” it’s filled with regular fantastic videos about every aspect of what we do, from comedian Gary Michaels. I highly recommend you follow Let’s Talk Comedy because many of those videos have insights and tips you’ll find invaluable.
This is one of them. Gary provides Joke Writing Prompts. I’ve seen tons of prompts around that weren’t terribly useful, but in this video Gary gives us real seeds for comedy creation and explains the intended structure as well as where the axial point of the joke needs to be. I’m impressed, and I think you will be too.
Check it out and consider subscribing to Let’s Talk Comedy. It’s one of the resources I wholeheartedly recommend.

The Self Made Stand Up is available as a paperback or e-book from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books.By and lots of other places.
More than a how-to book, The Self-Made Stand-Up is an essential resource for developing yourself as an effective comedian. If you’re a comedian, or looking to become one, The Self-Made Stand-Up is the emotional support animal you need.
