Learning from Screenwriters

I’m a big believer that our skills, techniques and material can all be inspired or drawn from other platforms and disciplines.

Today I just wanted to share a short video from Aaron Sorkin, the greatest (in my not-humble opinion) screenwriter ever. He gives some of his secrets to writing the electric resonating dialogue he’s famous for.

These tips range from saying his words out loud to make sure it flows and sounds as good as it looks on the page (I see comedians learning this one the hard way on stage all the time) to having a music time signature (eg. 4/4, 3/4 etc) while he writes, so ensure the syllables keep the rhythm. He ever goes as far as to say that when we screw this one up “the joke doesn’t work.”

Anyway, give it a watch. I think there’s a lot of value for comics in this one.
